In this training, attendees will apply, in depth, their understanding of psychopharmacology to pediatric populations including infants, children, and adolescents. Emphasis will be placed on the biopsychosocial treatment of children and adolescents. In addition, implications for evidence based, combined medicine (psychological intervention and pharmacotherapy) in treating ethnically diverse populations. Intermediate to advanced pharmacological principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are reviewed and newer concepts are explored. The difference in metabolism of drugs between children and adults is reviewed in detail. Emphasis is placed on medication management strategies that address neurodevelopmental disorders including Disruptive Disorders (such as ADHD, tic disorders and oppositionality), Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, and PTSD and Trauma-Rrelated Disorders.

Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Review the etiology of at least eight disorders commonly evident in children and adolescents, including ADHD, tic disorders, oppositionality, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, PTSD and trauma-related disorders.
- Inventory the symptomatology in diagnosing at least eight mental health disorders observed in children and adolescents.
- Distinguish the relationship between diagnoses and medication selections/indications of at least eight psychiatric conditions in pediatric treatment populations.
- Review available treatment algorithms for childhood mental disorders.
- Interpret three lab values particularly relevant to managing psychiatric medication in children and adolescents.
- Discuss potential application of pharmacogenomics in the selection of psychiatric medication with youth.
- Contrast the mechanisms of action of at least three medications used in the treatment of ADHD and discuss the various benefits, limitations and risks (like cardiovascular) of the medications.
- Compare the mechanism of action of at least three medications used in the treatment of Mood Disorders (e.g., what are their various benefits and limitations?).
- Differentiate the mechanisms of action of at least three medications used in the treatment of Anxiety Disorders (e.g., what are their various benefits and limitations?).
- Evaluate the mechanism of action of at least two medications used in the treatment of various symptoms of PTSD and Trauma-Related Disorders (e.g., discuss the various benefits and limitations?).
- Estimate the various benefits and limitations of at least two medications used in treating symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders (including their mechanisms of action).
- Discuss at least five common medication side effects often seen in the pharmacological treatment of youth.
- Critically analyze at least two uncommon adverse drug reactions.
- Review at least two drug-drug inhibitors and two drug-drug inducers in psychotropic medication used with youth.
- Debate at least two pros and cons of treating children with off-label medications.
- Debate at least two pros and cons of potential for increased suicidality among adolescents associated with using anti-depressants.
- Estimate the various benefits and limitations of at least two antihypertensive medications used with children to control anger and disruptive behaviors.
- Discuss at least two aspects of coordinating psychopharmacological care with Primary Care Providers (PCPs) and/or medical specialists.
- State two long-term effects, two ethical, and two legal issues associated with psychopharmacological intervention in children and adolescents
