Student Membership Benefits
As a student member, you’ll gain access to benefits designed to support your academic and professional journey. From networking opportunities and mentorship programs to conference presentations and legislative updates, IPA provides the resources and connections to help you thrive in the field of psychology.
Professional Development
IPA conferences, workshops, research presentations, and the IPA member blog give you a non-threatening environment through which to present your own research, as well as an opportunity to see many professional roles from a closer perspective. Service on IPA committees is encouraged.
Networking and Mentorship
Because of Iowa and IPA’s sizes, it is possible to meet multiple professionals from your area and across the state. This can be helpful in gaining referral sources for clients, learning about new practicum and research opportunities, or even ‘name-dropping’ at that vital internship interview. All student members have the opportunity to be paired with a full member, who serves as a mentor.
Advocacy and Legislative Updates
Stay informed of psychology-related issues both statewide and nationally: IPA offers continual legislative updates and opportunities to get involved in advocating for psychology-related issues. Furthermore, IPA is also a wonderful avenue for asking questions about those issues over the general or student E-lists. Finally students are encouraged to participate in our Legislative Breakfast to advocate for the profession and learn how to talk to legislators
Community and Collaboration
Meet other students across the state! IPA, especially IPA conferences, allows for students to meet and get to know each other for social reasons, for possible research collaboration, for professional opportunities, or just to share ideas and interests. We hope to expand this collaboration in the future through more student social activities throughout the year.

Iowa State University
I joined IPA my first year at Iowa State on the recommendation of a sponsored student member. I’m so glad I took advantage of this program because IPA has provided me with so many invaluable benefits. Most notably, a sense of support and community. This was especially true in the spring of 2020 when the pandemic and police murders of Black Americans left me feeling isolated, angry, distressed, and powerless. Joining the Diversity and Social Justice committee helped me feel like I was making a difference by working to create a more socially just and inclusive IPA. I also found a space where I could process my feelings of anger and despair at these injustices which as a person of color was incredibly healing. I learned that as a group, psychologists have tremendous power to incite positive change in our communities. The personal and professional connections I’ve made with Iowa psychologists in addition to the excellent trainings and conferences add up to an incredible value. I want to thank membership sponsors for making this opportunity available to me!
