Consider joining the federally funded National Health Service Corp!
The National Health Service Corp (NHSC) is a network of 7,000 primary health care professionals and 10,000 sites working in underserved communities across the country. To support the service of health professionals in the underserved areas, the NHSC provides clinicians with loan repayment and scholarships. According to the NHSC, the NHSC Loan Repayment Program offers fully trained primary care physicians (MD or DO), family nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, physician assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, and certain mental health clinicians $50,000 to repay student loans in exchange for 2 years serving in a community-based site in a high-need HPSA that has applied to and been approved by the NHSC as a service site. After completing their 2 years of service, loan repayors may apply for additional years of support. (excerpted October 23, 2010). Iowa psychologists have participated in the National Health Service Corp and benefited from the loan repayment and scholarships. Check out this link for the areas in Iowa that would likely be considered Health Professional Shortage Areas and qualify for NHSC involvement. https://nhsc.hrsa.gov/loanrepayment/stateloanrepaymentprogram/contacts.html

Iowa also offers a loan repayment program for primary health care professionals including psychologists through the Primary Care Recruitment and Retention Endeavor (PRIMECARRE). This program was authorized by the Iowa Legislature in 1994 to support local efforts to recruit and retain qualified healthcare practitioners to provide primary care services in Iowa. As a PRIMECARRE program, the Loan Repayment Program provides grants up to $30,000 per year to primary care physicians, dentists, mental health providers, and other medical professionals to assist in their repayment of educational loans. The number of grants awarded depends upon federal allocations and state matching funds. Individuals may re-apply to the program each year for additional assistance.
